Anna Deen

👋 Hey there,

I'm based in New York City as a data visualization reporter at The Messenger. Before that, I worked in the same capacity at Grid News, a media startup focused on politics and policy analysis, where I additionally managed the outlet's polling and contributed to investigative projects, like this one looking into MAGA activists buying up prime real estate in D.C.

I've covered the environment at Grist and public health at Carolina Public Press. As a beat reporter, I've reported on criminal justice issues in New York, including parole reform, the clemency process, and opioid treatment services in jails. My freelance work has made its way into Outside Magazine, Washington Monthly, The Drift, City LimitsTHE CITYViceEater, and other publications.

I received my M.A. in journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Before making the leap to media, I worked in publishing at Oxford University Press.

Odds are you'll find me hanging out with my dog Pepper, encouraging my basil plants to grow, or sampling new flavors at the local ice cream shop (yes, even in winter).
